Be yourself; Everyone else is already taken.

Welcome to the next financial blog for millennials where I tell you exactly what your doing because… well I’m doing it too. Let me guess, you’ve tried the barefoot investor, Marie Kondo and going hard like a minimalist, and yet here you are with a credit card debt and putting everything on afterpay? Don’t worry friend, you’re not the only one – I am also in this corner.
It’s a fun place isn’t it? Your somewhere between the age of 20-35 (maybe closer to 40) and your just wondering what put you in this position in this first place. Maybe it was the 5th coffee you had while cramming that finals exam for that university degree you thought would get you places but in reality it just had you questioning your position in life… and yeah maybe that office 9-5 is actually looking really good right now, or maybe it was that Saturday night bender when your last relationship failed while everybody around you was getting married and having the additional financial burden of children. Whatever it is… you’re here now. So what are you going to do about it?
I know what I am going to do… I am going to do something. See, a little background about my beautiful self; I am, currently, a 28 year old Australian who works rotating 7 day roster in hospitality, has a degree that sits in a storage box somewhere on the Gold Coast in said hospitality field, and am in debt. How much debt? You’ll just have to wait and see won’t you.
The surprising thing about this is that this is not uncommon for my generation. Whether it is a small debt of paying off that new iPhone, large debt of paying off a mortgage (you lucky son of gun, how’s owning a house feel?) or the many small ones that accumulate to a large one, we are all at some level of paying off a debt. So why this blog that you are taking the time to read right now? Because I want to have fun while breaking stigma and paying off debt… and secretly deep down I think you do too.
I must pre warn though – Although I had a hot take as a finance administrator for an ASX listed company – I am not at all a finance wizard nor can provide solid advice for your financial woes. If you are in trouble money wise, please seek professional advise through a financial advisor (and please for the love of the powers above DO NOT use those “helpers” that advise on the TV, they are not out there to help you and you’ll find that you could be in a worse of position by using them. Fun fact.)
Until next post, friend, things could be a whole lot worse but it’s not. So take a breather, have a tea or coffee, and treat yourself to that smashed avo. I can’t wait to take this journey with you.
Always, Your Friend,
Lauren
